Few days ago, my brother gave me the news that I was listed as one of the refs to report for duty for this November’s Paintball World Cup Asia 2008 in Kuala Lumpur. Well, it’s time to refresh my memories back with all the rules and regulations once again and yes, time to train myself. That’s the magic word - “training”.
Why train when I am only the ref, not the player?
1st - Imagine being under the hot sun and cover almost hundred games per day for more than 7 hours, less than 20minutes lunch break and to endure the shots from 0.68 calibre paintballs for free for 3 days straight.
2nd - Yes, we need to be fit and had the stamina to run, shout, jump, slide, roll on the ground and to have a good eye to minimise the bad calls.
3rd - As a lady, I need to work twice harder than the guys in the field…most likely I will be the only lady ref this year. Last year there were two - Gracy and me but this year Gracy will be playing with the Splatzoner.
4th - To be mentally prepared for any worst case scenarios.
So, as the story goes, there is this moron who look for me at the MIRC main channel and asked why I log in late last night. I told him that I came back late from KK Paintball Centre and was tired from joining the Splatzoners for team training, so I took a little rest before log into the internet. Then he asked me “You play?” I honestly replied “No, I’m going to ref this year.” then he said “cheh, I thought you play. Ref saja pulak. Need to train meh?” Who is he to underestimate the importance of paintball refs? Morons like this always thought that referees didn’t make any role in a game.
So I told him that the reason why I need to train. Then he replied “I used to be under the sun for 8 hours for 3 months when I represent Sabah for the below 18 football team.”
‘Used to’? Hello…..Come back to reality~~ did I told him that I ‘used to’? I am doing these stuff in the present time and he’s comparing me with his past. Live on lah…You play whatever sport that is, please have respect to other people. Your past glory is your past. Anyway, if you think that you are so good, you won’t be just stuck there when you are 18 right? You can still climb until now you might still in the sport…but you are not, and stuck there as a useless creep. So????
Your past glory is your past glory la…why wanna compare with my time now? For you it might just some ‘timbak-timbak’ sport, but for us, it meant more. So I am a paintball ref. At least I had the courage enough to compete myself with the guys, seeing great games, meeting great players from all around the world. I got cursed at, I got scolded, I made bad calls.
You know what, you arrogant jerk? You missed the fun that I had. =)
Your past glory (well…itu pun menumpang jak ba nama pasukan ko..bukan urang kenal ko pun) is your past glory. I am just enjoying what I am doing at the moment.
As what my mentor always told me - “You kill suckers. We teach them.” and “Everyone can be a paintball player, but not everyone can be a paintball ref.”
Game On!!!!!!!!! ^_^V
