An all wood, no nail clock tower was build in a small hill overlooking the then small town called Jesselton in memory of the first popular district officer of Jesselton that served during the British North Borneo Chartered Company Administration named Francis George Atkinson, who succumbed to tropical disease at a young age of 28.
Time flies. The structure had survived the destruction of Jesselton Town during World War II, now the oldest standing structure in Sabah, under the Antiquity and History Section of Sabah Museum, this building still serves to keep the time.
2010, Kota Kinabalu City.
Now, it was said that a shopping mall will be build where the structure stands. Which means, another piece of history will be gone.
Another shopping mall. Among of all things that people in Kota Kinabalu needed, another shopping mall to be build there. I do hope that anyone who is involved with this project will move your so called shopping mall somewhere. We don't need anymore shopping malls. We want an improved public transport system.
Please keep the clock tower where it is.
Dear Mr. Mayor, what say you?
Update @9:32pm:
It was said that the tower will not be removed or relocated but the progress will still be done adjacent to the clock, called Atkinson Tower. Supposed to be some hotel, gallery, mall to be build. (Check here: http://www.atkinsontower.com/vision.aspx)
Good if there is no damage done to the clock. However, I would prefer the place to be turn into a park with the clock in the middle and a small gallery opened next to it that shows the history of Jesselton, just like the Chimney Museum in Labuan.
Well, that's just my own thoughts la...others know what is better for the place and for the city better than I do. But I do know one thing, there other people out there just like me that love to see our historical building to be preserved for our future generations to see and know the story of the ground that they are stepping on.

Noooooooooooooooo not the Atkinson Clock Tower!!!!of all places!!!! Go build ur shopping mall elsewhere lar dudes!!!!!
What? why they even wanna build a mall there? OMFG @_@
Amy & Massy: tu la kan...shopping mall here and there...and not enuf with that, this historical building also want to tear down... =.=
Hi Angel, whats wrong with the local authorities or government?
If this were to happen here....the person who thought of this will be looking for a new job.
Here you can't even cut down the tree in your garden, branches can.
Must get permission from the Municipality first.
And for these old historic structures, unless its a danger to the public, then God help the person who mentions or have it destroyed. He or she will be destroyed first, ha ha.
Pity....that clock tower is o beautiful.
By the way, somebody mention history no longer in school curriculum? Then its no wonder people are ignorant of their history, like this clock tower.
Have a nice day, Lee.
Ai, tidak cukup ka tu shopping mall? biarlah dia berdiri sana, tanda kehidupan nenek moyang kita dulu juga bh.
Oh hi, blogwalking here. :)
I have to disagree with this. Not the Atkinson tower! Please save our historical building.
Shopping mall can be build elsewhere, just not on this historical site. Satu-satunya "mini big ben" KK yang masi bertahan. :(
Lee: sad isn't?
Rungitom & Miss Mag: Yeah, no more shopping malls please..and leave the clock as it is. As said, I prefer if they better plant more flowers and make that place a mini park where ppl can sit around and take photos there, along with a small gallery about the history of Jesselton.
angel bear,
is this for real?
then i will be the fist one who will stand amidst all of you to fight for Atkinson Tower!
You trust them that no damage would be done?
A lof of those guys will put money first then they say "f**k heritage convservation, f**k talking about green and enviroment consciouness.
if you know what i mean.
You know in Penang, i am glad with the new government in PR, they are doing a great job of saving the old buildings.
we have enough of malls already lah
Luckly the Tower safe. But I still dont agree with the 'future neigbours' of this Clock Tower..emm
Ned: yeah, we will be standing in front of the clock and defend it!
eugene: good they are aware of the historical buildings to be preserved. seems like some people think more of the $$ then the piece of history that can't be weighted even by gold.
Alv: I do agree on you. I prefer to leave the clock as it is...
maybe they wanna build more shopping malls so kk can really become a 'bandaraya' as per what that prick LUCA prefers lah.. ;-P
ok, i'd go with a historical garden rather than a mall...
even if jobs opening is important for the locals, malls can be build somewhere else.. no need to tumpang old structure's glamour for it lah...
yeah..more and more shopping malls build around here, but parking getting lesser, city jammed...crammed...and now they wouldn't want to spare the clock.
Trengganu part of the china twn and pasar was also demolish :(
I love historical buildings. It makes you think and imagine how life at that time would be, and how the people who walked in and out from there looked like....
